Atlas Copco, founded in 1873, is a Swedish multinational company specializing in industrial tools and equipment, including compressors, vacuum solutions, generators, and power tools. It operates in over 180 countries, emphasizing sustainable productivity and innovation.

In 2007, I developed a Facebook-like intranet for Atlas Copco using Drupal. This project aimed to enhance internal communication and collaboration among employees across the global organization. Leveraging Drupal's flexible and robust content management system, I created a platform that allowed users to create profiles, post updates, share documents, and participate in group discussions. The intranet featured a user-friendly interface designed to encourage engagement and interaction, mirroring the social media experience familiar to users.
Key functionalities included:
  1. User Profiles: Each employee could create and customize their profile, adding personal and professional information to facilitate networking and collaboration.
  1. News Feed: A central news feed displayed updates and posts from colleagues, departments, and project groups, keeping everyone informed about the latest developments.
  1. Document Sharing: The platform supported secure document sharing, enabling teams to collaborate more effectively on projects by accessing and contributing to shared files.
  1. Group Discussions: Employees could create and join groups based on departments, projects, or interests, fostering community and teamwork through focused discussions.
  1. Event Management: An event calendar allowed users to organize and promote company events, meetings, and social gatherings, enhancing engagement and participation.
The intranet significantly improved internal communication within Atlas Copco, breaking down silos and creating a more connected and collaborative work environment. It also supported the company's global operations by providing a unified platform accessible to employees in different regions, aligning with Atlas Copco's commitment to innovation and efficiency. The success of this project demonstrated the potential of social media-inspired tools in a corporate setting, paving the way for future digital initiatives within the company.
